Profile: Dr Trish Vezgoff, Civil Celebrant

As part of a new feature on The Bride's Diary Blog, we will be introducing you to individuals who work in the wedding industry... giving you an insight into who they are and why they love weddings!

This week we have been talking to Dr Trish Vezgoff, a Civil Celebrant who has been officiating at weddings for the past 17 years. Trish spoke to us about her love of providing unique wedding services  tailored to the bridal couples' personality, as well as the wide range of exciting and emotional experiences she has had as a celebrant...

Tell us a little about your business…

I am a Civil Celebrant, having applied almost 25 years ago after having been to several civil weddings that I felt all lacked a great deal in both content and delivery. I then waited eight years for a response from Canberra before my appointment early in 1994.

•What is your role in the business and why are you passionate about it
?

I am a sole trader, and still delight in being able to help couples achieve the ceremony of their dreams. I am also called upon frequently to write and officiate at other ceremonies such as baby namings, renewal of vows or even funeral ceremonies for families I have worked with before or who have referred me to friends.

• How long have you been working in the industry?

I am entering my seventeenth year as a Celebrant.

• What are some of your past business experiences?
The experience of being a Celebrant has taken me to many venues I may otherwise not have visited. Also, because I work so closely with clients to help them achieve their ideal ceremony, I have participated in formal and informal ceremonies, in themed ceremonies, on beaches, mountain tops, parks, and indoor settings including on boats on Sydney Harbour, reception centres and Canberra's National Library. Wet or windy weather cam often pose challenges as can shade free sites in hot weather. A couple of times ceremonies have had to stop in the middle because a member of the bridal party or a guest has fainted; once the best man had to scramble over a cliff face because a high wind had blown the table holding the documents and a large paperweight over the edge. Red carpets can also be hazardous on rough ground or in high winds. Too many more experiences to mention!

• What is one of your favourite recollections from your business?

A couple of moving experiences come to mind: the marriage of an eighty two year old man to his seventy-eight year old bride.
A renewal of vows ceremony on a couple's sixtieth wedding anniversary at which five generations of the family were present.
Another renewal of vows for a couple who had been married at a Registry Office overseas forty years before and who had both suffered serious illnesses in the interim. The 'bride' fulfilled her lifetime wish of having a proper white wedding with flowers and all the trimmings, and with their grown up children acting as their bridal party.
Little children at a wedding, specially in a bridal party, can always be relied upon to provide unintended merriment and/or embarrassment.

• Tell us a bit about your family and home life…

I work from a home office, and my family have become used to having to consult my desk diary before planning most family get togethers. My children are now grown with their own families so I have a rich and full life juggling work and play.

• How do you enjoy spending your spare time?

In what spare time I have - not much - I love listening to music, going to the theatre, reading, travelling and socialising with friends over a good meal and nice wines.

• What is your most memorable life experience?

Too many to enumerate, but my own marriage, children, travelling around the world and also attaining my PhD as a mature age student would have to be high on the list.

• What are your plans for the future?

Whilst ever I am fit and still blessed with curiosity, I hope to continue as I do at present.

A Classic Garden Wedding at Camden Lakeside Country Club

Jodie & Rodney Hill • 20th March 2010

Jodie and Rodney met at high school. But it wasn’t until a few years later that they became close friends and their beautiful relationship blossomed.

A few days before Jodie’s birthday, Rodney insisted that they go out, even though the morning was overcast and better suited to curling up with a good book. Jodie agreed and the couple first drove to picturesque Berry and then on to Cambewarra Mountain lookout. While soaking up the stunning panoramic view, Rodney asked Jodie, “How much do you love me?” With her arms held wide, she replied, “As much as the view”. And that’s when Rodney proposed.

“Holding a beautiful diamond ring he asked: “Jodie, will you be my wife?” I was so excited and shocked. Of course I said ‘Yes’.”

As it happened, a family afternoon tea in honour of Jodie’s birthday was planned for the following day, so the delighted couple were able to break their wonderful news.

On the morning of the wedding, Jodie and Rodney enjoyed spending time with their bridal party and families at their parents’ homes.

Jodie’s hairdresser and make-up artist left the girls plenty of time to relax with some champagne before it was time to get dressed.

Jodie’s beautiful taffeta wedding dress featured lace detailing with beads and sequins on the bodice and train. Both Jodie and her bridesmaids had photographs taken with their gorgeous parasols before leaving for the ceremony.

Rodney and his groomsmen were handsome in their dark charcoal pin-striped suits. Rodney chose a silver tie, while the boys wore purple ties to match the bridesmaids’ dresses.

“One of the most memorable moments was proudly walking down the aisle with my Dad, and then being hand in hand with my husband” said Jodie when recalling the ceremony.

The couple’s reception was exactly what they had hoped for: a big celebration with their family and closest friends. Some of the night’s highlights included the emotional speeches,  Jodie and Rodney’s first dance as husband and wife, and all of the guests dancing at the reception and enjoying the fun.

When the night finally came to an end and the couple reluctantly left, they spent a few nights at The Rocks, Sydney before escaping to the Cook Islands for an idyllic honeymoon.

Modern Vintage Glamour at Fountaindale Manor

Alex and Malcolm celebrated their wedding day in the gorgeous Southern Highlands, with a beautiful Modern Vintage Glamour theme. With the ceremony and reception both held at Fountaindale ManorVibrant Photography captured all the excitement, romance and style of the day...

Settling on a modern vintage theme, the couple called in experts to help them create a cocktail bar style reception in the gardens of their venue.

With chandeliers draped through the trees, vintage furniture on a black and white floor, and gorgeous urns filled with feathers, their dream reception was realised.

The couple’s wedding was very much a family affair. A family member made Alex’s dress, and her cousin dressed her hair. Malcolm’s cousin made their wedding rings, and Malcolm’s mother created a delicious wedding cake.

And as a very special touch, Malcolm’s father supplied an Oakland Roadster – purchased by Malcolm’s grandfather in 1929, to be part of the reception’s modern vintage backdrop.

Sadly, Alex’s father died some years ago, so Alex’s mum escorted her down the aisle. The couple were married by a family friend and after an emotional ceremony, the party began.

A photo booth, a bowl of Kinder Surprises, great food and a fabulous band set the scene for a unique and fun filled reception that Alex and Malcolm’s guests still talk about.

Profile: Simone from TaleChasers Photography

As part of a new feature on The Bride's Diary Blog, we will be introducing you to individuals who work in the wedding industry... giving you an insight into who they are and why they love weddings!

This week we have been speaking with the energetic and passionates Simone from TaleChasers Photography, based in the Southern Highlands. Simone told us about her passion for capturing stories and personalities through her photography, her past life as a police officer and her future plans...

• Tell us a little about your business…

TaleChasers Photography specialises in weddings, portraits for couples, families, children, pregnancy, pets, portfolios etc. Our business aim is to help make your wedding fairytale come true. Our photography is beautiful, our service is personal, our value is fantastic and our enthusiasm for your wedding day is genuine.

• What is your role in the business and why are you passionate about it?

I am the owner, administrator and photographer which means everything about my company is close to my heart. I really enjoy being around people and love the fact that people are so comfortable around me that I am able to photograph them really being themselves. I named my company TaleChasers because of the stories I like to see forming about personalities as I shoot.

• How long have you been working in the industry?

I have been in business in the Southern Highlands since 2006, prior to that I contracted as a wedding photographer to studios in Sydney but as a contractor I always felt as though I wasn’t able to give my clients the level of personal service that satisfied me, so going into business for myself seemed the next logical step…and where better than the gorgeous Highlands to set up shop!

• What are some of your past business experiences?

I have been so lucky to have met so many great couples as their wedding photographer. I have really connected with all of them I guess because I have kept my business practices so personal that in the end we really feel like friends. I have always been open to the artistic, creative visions of others too and have many very talented friends so when couples come to me with original ideas about their wedding day plans, I encourage them and share their enthusiasm, this helps keep the passion in my business burning.

• What is one of your favourite recollections from your business?

Every wedding leaves me with some great memories but I have to love the country wedding couple who when their caterers called to say they were running an hour late, rather than panic or throw tanties, instead cheered and sang out simultaneously “Let’s go to the pub!”. We shared a couple of Bundies and a lot of laughs that day.

• Tell us a bit about your family and home life…

Life is good. I am married to a wonderful man and am a mum of one and a half (with my second child due in December this year). Being a mum is the most challenging and rewarding role I have ever undertaken and my son is delightful. I have always loved being around children and the joyfulness they bring.

• How do you enjoy spending your spare time?

What spare time? No seriously, I love spending time with my family. I grew up in a wonderful environment and happily my parents, siblings, cousins etc are still my closest friends. They’re all a little crazy and lots of fun. I also love being around animals and teaching my son the joys of our great outdoors.

• What is your most memorable life experience?

Apart from getting married and becoming a parent, my most memorable time is when I was a serving Police Officer. Stationed in the Sydney suburbs, it was always an adventure. It was great, at the start of every shift you would wonder what was ahead, one minute patrolling and sharing a laugh with your partner, next minute in high speed pursuit of a vehicle, jumping fences after fleeing offenders, rescuing people from all sorts of perilous situations or being confronted with violence, grief, or the downright weird and wonderful. It was certainly a time in my life full of emotion and excitement and has prepared me for just about anything that can happen in this crazy, wonderful world of ours.

• What are your plans for the future?

Having another baby won’t slow me down for too long. I have an incredible support network who know how much my work means to me and will help ensure I have the time (and energy) to carry on. I absolutely love my work so it can only continue onward and upward from here. So many more great people to meet…
TaleChasers Photography offers personal, fun service, beautiful photography and some great value package deals to suit just about everyone. For all the details contact simone via enquiries@talechasers.com.au or visit www.talechasers.com.au
